Black Sorcery Ngải

witch

I was barely twenty-five when I first heard of ngải.  I had no idea what it was, or what it did.  The only thing I knew about it was that it was a spooky thing some people kept in their homes when they wanted to be granted a favor.  A friend heard that I had never seen this plant before, so he offered to take me to the home of his cousin, who actually had a ngải living in her house.  I agreed immediately, as curiosity is a Tao Babe’s middle name.

It was my first excursion into Vietnamese Black Sorcery, and it still has me spooked to this very day…

  1. Yes, it did. I remember being a bit scared, but it’s one of those, ‘scared but can’t look away’ type of feeling. My curiosity was stronger than my fear so I tried to understand it. I find that by understanding something that I am normally afraid of, the fear gets removed to be replaced by a strange sort of fascination for the subject. Hence my delving into such matters.
